Improved Window Straps for Twizy Windows
Greetings!

I thought that I would share my first improvement to my new-to-me Twizy.

There's LOTS to do, but this one is simple, and greatly improves a constant interaction experience.

My Twizy came with the Korean-market sliding windows, which are excellent, minus a few design flaws that need to be fixed. The first of which is the velcro straps that hold them on the interior of the cabin.

Not only is velcro a very 'cheap' feeling and looking solution... I really hate the sound, haha.

But also, the adhesive on the pads is garbage, and is susceptible to softening and releasing in higher temps. I would often come out to the straps hanging inside the cabin, with the pads attached.

My solution? Go completely overkill with Fidlock magnetic connectors, and Dyneema webbing. I also stitched on some olive-green pull tabs that will later match well to the color theme I'm going with.

It did require lengthening the holes in the windows an additional 25mm, but this is easily done with hand-files.

As mentioned, the straps are Dyneema (basically bullet proof) that are length adjusted with sewn velcro. Set the length, and they just work :)

The Fidlock mechanisms are pop-riveted into the interior plastic for a very sturdy connection. The side benefit of this is greater theft/tampering resistance. The straps are so strong, and the mechanism as well, that it is almost impossible to open the door if you don't know how to release the straps.

If you've got Instagram, you can flip through to the end of my post and see how great the Fidlock mechanisms work :)

If there were enough interest, I could easily source materials/mechanisms and perhaps offer an upgrade kit :)

Best,
-Jeff

Apologies, still getting used to the forum :) this should probably be moved under 'Accessories/Windows'.

My mistake, If a moderator could move it, that would be great. I'm not sure I can.

Das Problem kenne ich auch zu gut. Daher habe ich mit Gummibändern und Haken gelöst. Aber das von Dir ist besser!

Hi Scoob,
Please post a link to a source for your straps and Fidlocks. I tried searching Amazon for Fidlock, but I cant find the same version as you have used. Your idea is really good. Thanks

Kein Problem! :) Everything was sourced through my fav. textile source- www.extremtextil.de out of Berlin. The straps I made myself.

They have a large variety of Fidlock options, and there's several solutions that can work in-place of what I did. But I had the webbing already, so that's what I used.

The 25mm Dyneema webbing is SERIOUSLY overkill... you could lift the Twizy with that stuff... But like I said, I already had it, and I like overkill :) A standard 25mm webbing would be just fine, or go with a smaller buckle and 20mm webbing. That way you don't need to lengthen the holes in your windows like me.

I've got contacts at FidLock because of what I do for work, and I've got all the materials for straps, so I could put together a handful of kits for a good price if people were interested. The prototype is already done!

But if you like projects as much as I do, definitely pull out the old sewing machine!

Thanks for interest!

It seems like everyone likes their 20mm straps. :)

I will reach out to my buddy at Fidlock to see what solutions he has for 20mm (there are differences to the 25 that I used) and if he can give me a good deal on a small quantity of buckles, and go from there.

I would do the window straps in black, and choose a UV-Stable webbing. I could do Dyneema, but this material is very expensive, and like I said, overkill for the work the straps need to do.

I can offer a black webbing for the buckles, or, if there's interest in 1 other color, I could source that as well. like a red? What colors would people be interested in?

I've also been working on my next improvement/Twizy frustration.... how un-necessarily bulky and un-cool the key is... :)

For me black colour and cheaper (not cheap, but cheaper) material would be fine.

Regarding the key: did you search the forum for "Knallerschlüssel"?

I had not searched, but I have seen a few approaches to this before.

I don't want to make things overcomplicated, I want to make a sleek, more compact key-fob that reuses the RFID in the current key, but in a better form-factor. I dislike the 'bar of soap' and just how big the keys are. There's no need to be so fat!

I'm already on V3, that image was the first try. They're being printed on my 3D printer, and so far look very promising. Hopefully where I've placed the chip will still work with the vehicle. And if so, then this would be something else I'd be happy to make multiples of.

Hope I'm not too late!
